Convert back to Modern Calendar / Gregorian

A national solar calendar

The Saka calendar adopted for national use begins with Chaitra. Its year is 78 less than the Modern Calendar / Gregorian year after the March new year; before that boundary, it is 79 less. In a Modern Calendar / Gregorian leap year Chaitra starts on 21 March and has 31 days. In other years it starts on 22 March and has 30 days.

The next five months have 31 days each, and the final six have 30. This makes conversion a solar-day calculation without a sunrise-city setting. The calendar above shows the Modern Calendar / Gregorian month with a Saka date in each cell; the selected-day panel gives the full equivalent.

Try the year boundary

21 March 2026 is 30 Phalguna, Saka 1947. The following day is 1 Chaitra, Saka 1948. In the leap year 2024, 1 Chaitra falls on 21 March. Enter either side in the converter to see the year change.

Saka and lunar Shaka

The same era name appears in regional lunar almanacs, but the month boundary can differ. National Saka Chaitra starts on a fixed March solar rule; a lunar Chaitra begins from the relevant new moon. Choose the Hindu calendar when you need a lunar tithi or fortnight.
