One date, several regional readings

The default is North Indian Purnimanta: months end at the full moon and the Vikram year changes with Chaitra’s spring new year. The Modern Calendar / Gregorian day remains visible in every cell. Open a date for its month, fortnight, tithi at sunrise, and the calculated tithi end in IST.

The Deccan option uses Amanta months and a Chaitra-based lunar Shaka year; the Gujarati option uses Amanta months with a Kartika-based Vikram year. These lunar Shaka years are distinct from the national solar Saka calendar. City selection changes the sunrise at which the tithi is read.

What happens in an extra month?

In 2026 an Adhika Jyeshtha lunation falls between the May and June new moons. Its label is preserved in both fortnight systems. For Delhi, 17 May and 1 June read Adhika Jyeshtha; by 16 June the reading is regular Jyeshtha. Choose “Adhika / extra” in the reverse lookup to distinguish repeated month names.

Repeated and missing tithis

A tithi is a 12-degree increase in the Moon–Sun elongation. Its length differs from a civil day, so it can occur at two successive sunrises or fall between them. Reverse lookup returns every matching sunrise date within 2026–2027. Dates with a transition within five minutes of sunrise display that boundary alongside the reading.

Festival entries retain their published reference city. A sunrise tithi alone does not assign a festival’s ritual time: some observances use evening, midnight or moonrise rules. Use the event’s source for that decision.

Calculation and validation

IndiaTime computes geocentric elongation and local sunrise with Astronomy Engine 2.1.19. Lunar month signs use a Lahiri mean ayanamsha approximation over the bounded 2026–2027 release. Transition times are rounded to minutes. Selected new-year, intercalary-month and festival boundaries were compared with Drik Panchang; near-sunrise transitions are flagged.
